On the path to self improvement it is very easy for us to lose focus and fall back into our old ways. It could be external events causing a break in your routine, dealing with the loss of a loved one or a decline in mental health. You try really hard to keep it all together but your mind and heart just aren’t in it. When I go through these rough periods in life, the things that I find useful to do are to:
1. Cultivate a healthy social media environment
If you are like most people today, social media is a significant part of your life. With millions of users staring at their screens for hours a day, social media influences our feelings and thoughts about ourselves, others and the world. If we fail to use it more intentionally and positively it can become toxic to our mental health. To avoid this trap, take a Marie Kondo approach and only follow pages that make you happy and inspire you to stay on track. In this way your social media feed acts as a vision board that motivates and gives you the positive reinforcement you need. Whether it’s comedy, exciting innovations in your dream career field or motivational, follow it! Even if you fall off the wagon, you can always count on these pages to cheer you up and remind you of your goals
2. Surround yourself with positive people
Surrounding yourself with toxic/ negative people when in such a delicate state could tip you over the edge and ensure that you continue down a path of decline. Thus pushing you further away from the amazing version of yourself that you are destined to be. It is said that you are the average of the five people you talk to the most. Are the people around you helping you stay on track?
If you are unable to avoid negative people and find better influences, my best suggestion to you would be to seek out online communities or listen to podcasts that align with the person you want to be. You’d be surprised how much of a positive effect it will have on you.
3. Cultivate a healthy & nurturing environment
As a designer, I can say with certainty that our environment greatly affects our mood. Decluttering and organizing your environment not only makes you more productive but also increases your levels of happiness. It’s one of the quickest ways to improve your situation.
4. Find a mentor and accountability partner
This should be someone you respect and admire that is on a similar journey as you or has achieved something you would also like to do. Having someone that understands and can advise you on the struggles you may be facing is a source of comfort and will give you the strength to bounce back. If they have done it, why can’t you?
5. Create a vision board
Think about all the things you want to do, the life you want to have & things you want to achieve and start that collage! When you’re done place it somewhere that you can’t avoid. Make copies if you need to and put it in multiple locations so you don’t forget. That amazing life can be yours! You can achieve it!
6. Recognize your triggers and learn how to deal with them
This right here is a game changer and definitely requires some self reflection. If you go through most of your days just reacting to everything, you are not in control of your life- you’re in a reactive state. Staying in a reactive state is dangerous because you can be easily manipulated or distracted from what’s important. Therefore it’s important to approach things calmly and intentionally. If you know you have certain triggers that prevent you from getting things done, make an effort to identify them, analyze them, and find strategies to combat them.
